Motion JPEG (M-JPEG) compression technology.

Overview

M-JPEG is a popular compression format that applies JPEG picture compression to each frame of the video. The video frames don't interact with each other like they do in MPEG-2 or MPEG-4, which leads to larger file size but requires less CPU time for compression and decompression (which can be critical for real-time encoding of HD video).

This has lead to the format's wide adoption in the world of non-linear video editing, where Motion JPEG is often used for high-quality video capture as a raw data format. Converting an M-JPEG video into MPEG-2 or H.264 delivers very high quality of the resulting video stream.

Another feature of the format is its ease of reverse playback, which makes it usable in video surveillance and sport analytics applications.

M-JPEG is also a common video format in modern digital still cameras and IP cameras.
